Douro Valley Retreat. Bringing balance to your life and living in harmony with your environment. That is the objective with which we started this project. We want to clearly share and propagate this with others. In our society of busyness, stress and global challenges we try to create an oasis (“Raj”) in which everyone will feel at home. Just a moment of rest, relaxation and letting go of the daily grind.

Sustainability
Connecting with our environment and trying to have the smallest possible footprint on our earth, that is our goal within Quinta de Raj. The emphasis is therefore on the use of sustainable and reused or recoverable raw materials.
We have made special provisions for this, so that we live climate neutrally:
– Energy is generated entirely from solar energy. Approx. 160 m2 of solar panels provide for our energy needs
– Our guests can charge their electric car (for free)
– We produce our own food in our own gardens, such as vegetables, fruits and nuts.
– Household waste mostly recycled (paper, glass, plastic). Organic matter is composted and processed as compost for the garden
– The diet is mainly vegetarian. Meat consumption is kept to a minimum.
– We have a non-smoking policy
Our Vision
Because the location is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, we submitted our plans in 2019 for approval to the authorities. It was important here that we work with local parties in order to support the local economy. Our architects are two young brothers from Vila Real and together with a contractor from Peso da Régua, the construction work started in August 2020. First of all the centuries-old terraced structure, which is so characteristic of the Douro valley, needs to be restored.
